I wish I had money for each time this "white hose" topic comes up! From my younger days I can only remember plain self-coloured hose worn for daywear and tartan hose for evening wear and I can understand why people like to stick to that. There is another school of thought, however, which has to do with the evolution of fashion, and this sees nothing wrong in styles changing over the years. That is, in fact, exactly what has happened and it has travelled from doublet, buckle brogues, jabot and tartan hose through Prince Charlie, white hose and ghillie brogues then onto Jacobite shirts and swordsmans waistcoats back around to - yes you guessed it, doublet etc.. Just as others have said about pipe bands evolving their dress with the passage of time. It is a natural thing for humans to do. There are, of course, always those who do not follow fashion and, while this may be ascribed to a degree of eccentricity, particularly among members of the nobility, it is more likely due to the fact that they (and previous generations of their family) have worn the stuff and they just get it altered to fit. While it is true that in any fashion "what goes around comes around" I can see nothing wrong in adapting your dress to suit what is fashionable at the time.
