Diced hose are a different ball game - usually knit flat, and intarsia is ... Well ... Intarsia.

    I won't go there.

But I've used the Toirneach pattern, and it's very good. Make sure you have the correct tension, and your father's brother just changed his name to Bob.

For diced hose, if not making them yourself, I think I'd spring for store-boughten ones. J. Higgins has them for $60/pair. I've never handled their socks, but several other members here have.

I still think you could learn to knit. It's not as complicated as it looks.

And to answer your question about diced hose patterns, yes they are available. You can also buy a kit that has the yarn and instructions already sacked up together. Most Scottish shops have them, and Google turned up several sites with them, although they masquerade as tartan hose for dancers.

Lady Veronica Gainford's Designs for Knitting Kilt Hose & Knickerbocker Stockings has lovely instructions for a small diced pattern. I would recommend this book to any hose knitter, experienced or not.

I would like a pattern for the large diced pattern, but I have been unable to find one.
