    Small Town Kilting

So with Ken and Marsha visiting last night we decided to meet up at the Antelope Point Marina out on the Navajo Reservation. By the time I got there it was pitch dark save some incredible starlight. New moon. The place didn't waste much electricity on lighting in the parking lot, but as soon as I pulled up an electric cart pulled up alongside me and the driver - a young Navajo - said, "Good evening Mr. Macdonald." Didn't know him...blew me away to be called by name.

Its a long way from the parking lot down to the waterfront and these cartdrivers ferry people back and forth for tips.

But what are the chances of being recognized by name, in pitch dark, on the reservation, but for being kilted?

Still have no clue where I knew the driver from...he sure knew me. Never would happen without kilts.

Might he have been a former client or member of AA or the son of one who heard stories about you?
It might just be that you're such a celebrity that everyone knows you, or at least wants to.

Aye, or a ploy for a nice tip. If it was, it worked.

Were you wearing a MacDonald tartan kilt? Maybe he was just 'informed'.

Amazing, isn't it, how something so simple can make such a lasting impression? Back in the 70's, my mom taught music at a school on a Chicoria Apache reservation close to Chama, New Mexico. We went there this past summer to see how it had changed. We went into a grocery store to get some water and snacks, and the lady at the check stand got all excited. "Mrs. Butterworth!! Are you moving back? I would love to have you teach my kids!" It's the little things that make good things happen in life. You brightened that kid's day for sure, Ron.

Ron, I live in a small town too. I was coming from work (where kilts are not allowed) and stopped at the grocery store. One of the sackers made a statement that caused me more than a little embarrassment, he looked at me and said "What are you doing wearing pants?" The checkout girl saved the little old lady next to me from a heart attack by explaining that I am usually kilted when shopping. As the sacker was helping me with my stuff, he apologized for not phrasing his question better. We both had a good laugh and I am pretty sure that lady had a great story to tell her coffee clutch...
