You're not the only one, Jock. On behalf of my country, I apologise.

One persons snide remark does not reflect a countries opinion. Do not apologize for the USA. The fact of his nobility means little to me, I can not comprehend the meaning. This is not meant as any form of disrespect. The fact that he is a veteran does require the utmost respect. As a veteran, I would extend the best I have to offer, regardless of his rank.
Now, I shall climb off my soap box and ask the questions I was wanting to ask.
How do people from England and Scotland perceive our interpretation of the Highland Games?

Jock, you must also accept that some people find such positions of power offensive.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Paul, I think that if you look very carefully, you will find that the Earl of Wessex has no position of power at all. He does, on the other hand, have a position of privilege, into which he was born. Neither he, nor you, nor I could choose our parents. How can the accident of birth be offensive? It is like blaming a child for having the wrong colour of eyes or skin.

Chas

I do indeed understand that and I have some sympathy for that point, however there are ways of voicing those opinions in a courteous way. I may also add that there are those of us who consider positions of power and privilege can, in the right circumstances, be used for good purposes. As in this case. Why be so grudging about it?

Some people are newsworthy becasue of actions they themselves perform, others are newsworthy because of positions they hold in society, be it earned, inherited or granted. The fact remains that when one of these persons pops up on the radar, there is interest. Having such a person attend the games raises the profile of the Games, which is a good thing. You certainly have the right to not have an interest in the individual, but "to stuff it"?

O.K, guys. This started out as a perfectly reasonable, interesting a decent post.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but it's simply not polite or decent to phrase your opinions in an insulting manner.
The original topic of this thread is about his visit. Let's keep it to that and maybe discuss pros and cons. As for political opinions, take them to PM.
I'd hate for this thread to get shut down because it's very interesting.
