I gather it was quite old, and the seller had purchased it years ago from the Ayrshire militia.
I am sure someone here will know more about this than me! (greenhorn stage #1!!)

As was said by some bright person at some point in time, a picture is worth a thousand words. Several pictures, several thousands.
