Back to reference of the original sporan with the broad cantle-I'd like to chime in. THis style of Cantle that has a broad leaf that extends down over the panel is best suited for a hair sporran. There are technical reasons for this that would be long and drawn out, but if one is using a pelt with hair instead of actual long hair, then the cantle should be nice and tight against the panel and not protrude downward too far (If the sporran has a flap, whole other story). ANyway, if I were to have this cantle, I'd take dark gray horsehair, I'd take silver bouillon tassels and make a levee sporran that would be the toast of the town!
