I voted to never mix leathers, b/c my real answer wasn't up there...
IF there's an article in the ensemble that has BOTH colors in it (black and brown in the sporran Geoff shows above), then I think it's OK to mix. I have a black belt with brown knot work embossing. I got it to wear with either color belt and/or shoes.
