Yes, silk ties are fine. Especially if they match a silk pocket square. 
It used to be the only place my wardrobe had much personality was my ties. Now with highland dress many of them are too busy, so I am slowly aquiring a few more.
I'm the same way. I have a lot of ties, but unfortunately almost all of them are patterned ties that just look too busy with a tartan kilt. So I'm having to go back and buy plain colored ties so the attention is on the kilt.
Sounds like a heck of a bargain at JC Penneys! Dang, I may need to call and see if they're open today (Easter Sunday... doubtful) and rush over to get some.
