It's amazing what these guys could get away with. In any other field they would be reprimanded or fired.

One guy was openly chauvinist. He showed the class Playboy photos of a former student. He let it be known that any hot-looking girl would get an "A" regardless of test scores, especially if she visited him during office hours.

Another guy was openly racist, spending much class time on anti-American, anti-Caucasian rants.

My son is in college now and he has a teacher who goes on similar rants. Her bone to pick is about the US treatment of Native Americans. Though this treatment was horrible and needs to be discussed, the problem is that she spends a huge amount of class time on these rants, which have nothing to do with the subject she is supposedly teaching.
Here's the thing: such rants as you describe are part of normal PC practice. The more you do such things, the more virtue you are demonstrating. And the less you are open to criticism on other issues, such as poor teaching practices or abilities. In my school days, PC was more along the lines of supporting socialism/communism and opposing our democratically elected governments over the Stalinist and Maoist ones that were doing so well for the folks then. There may be a cure for these ills of academe, but it doesn't appear that time can be one of them except perhaps over centuries.
