I've 2 brown belts and need to buy a sporran. I was concerned about matching the shade of brown. Does it matter just as long as they're brown?
Black is black but brown comes in a variety of colors.

I also would like to have a dark green belt. Saw some at a celtic festival once but can't remember the vendor. Does anyone know a vender with green belts who frequents festivals?

    Thanks

Wall*Mart has brown heel dye and that works really great.
Just make sure you use the polish after to seal the colour.

Thx for the idea, I'm parting my kilt outfit together on the cheap and this was a good find.
I have never had a belt with a bigger fancy buckle, would it be hard to change this belt over to one with a buckle? do the larger buckles use tension to hold the belt in place?
    thanks

I had some Kelly green and some dark green Rit dyes mixed up from another project, and poured them together along with a little more water, and heated it almost to a simmer. I put one of the Home Depot belts in it and left it for a day and a half. I then took it outside and let it dry in the sun. After that I rubbed a good amount of mink oil into it, to seal in the color. It didn't dye quite as dark as I'd hoped, but it looks nice, nonetheless. I don't have any pictures, and you might get different results if you try the process yourself.

What a great idea! I've used old Army belts on my camo (used RIT black - made a black / green belt) and green kilts. Never thought a brown or black could be just as easy.
    Brilliant!!

I didnt stain the inside because I didnt want to mark up my kilt. any ideas? i have seen some with felt liners. I used fiebings leather dye and leather balm with atom wax.

When I make belts, I don't worry too much about the inside color (for my own belts, at least)...nobody will see the inside but me. Sometimes I will apply some Edge Kote from Tandy to the inside...as far as I know, this will not rub off on clothing, but it's just to help some of the "nap" from the flesh side of the leather to lay down, and not really necessary.

As for the "Big guys"...Tandy has belt straps from 1" to 3" wide by 50" long. You can get 2" wide up to 72" long. If you need to make yourself a belt.
