I don't know if they're in style, but I will say that the idea appeals to me because I'm not overly tall or wide. It seems like all the ties I find these days are made for tall, overweight men. They look ridiculously wide on my narrow torso, especially when tied to a shortened length to wear with a kilt. So narrowing a tie for kilting seems like a good idea to me, regardless of whether "skinny ties" are in style amongst the pants-wearing crowd or not.
