Unfortunately, they're all "pre-tied", which is not my cup of tea.

Kind of what I had in mind, only with a different symbol that might be more "readable" in tiny form on a tie. If we're going to have a distinctive piece of apparel, it should be recognizably distinctive instead of needing constant explanation. It should also be relatively muted, not loud. If a tie clashes with everything in my closet, it doesn't mean I can wear it with anything.

I agree that it should be recognizable and distinctive, but there's only so much you can do on a necktie! And in reality, I figure it only really needs to be recognizable to other Xmarkers?
I think a tie based on the Xmarks tartan colors wouldn't be too loud or clash with too much.
On the logo tie, I'm thinking of something like the clan logo ties here; http://www.scotweb.co.uk/products/cl...otif-neck-tie/ As I mentioned, I have a similar tie in dark blue with silver-grey logos woven into it, the logos are 5/8ths of an inch, and are quite detailed, readable and recognizable to anyone who knows it. An Xmarks clan badge that size wouldn't actually say "X MARKS THE SCOT .COM" on it, but should be just as readable, certainly to one who knows it.

I have been watching this thread with quite a bit of interest. I too would like an X Marks Tie.
I have been looking over some websites of custom tie makers and think I have a good idea of what would be possible and the approximate cost.
So far, for a silk, Jacard woven tie the cost would be in the neighborhood of $55.00 to $75.00. That would probably take it out of the range of most of our members.
We would also need at least 50 of you to pony up the money to meet the minimum order of most companies.
If anyone knows of someone who could do it with comparable quality at a lower cost please send me the contact via PM.
I will try to do up some digital graphics of the options that have been put forth so far, and perhaps a couple more that have not been suggested, for everyone to look at.
If we can find a company to make a good quality tie, to a design we can agree on, at a price that is in the range our members can afford, I think this would be a great addition.

I came across this company while doing an internet search. It appears that they are in the business of doing custom-run ties of this sort. I have not inquired as to pricing.

Perhaps this may be the time to speak and maybe it is pointing out the obvious, but in case it is not --------.
I am not at all sure what the history of "club", regimental, old School ties are, but let us say that in, roughly,a period from 1900 to 1930 were when a lot(most?) of that sort of tie was" invented" and I know not who and how the colours were put together. Often regimental colours were combined, heraldic colours, or the colour scheme of some chancellor of a university's wife's curtains. The end result is that we have the colours that we have, which may not be the colours that we may have chosen some 80 years down the line. Much like most Clan tartans in fact.
So whatever tie colour scheme we eventually have for our Xmarks tie, it will inevitably not please every one. So the danger is that we could easily be still discussing the colour scheme of "our" tie in 5 years time(about a year so far), by trying to please every body. WE WON'T! This is maybe a time for a committee of one to take on the design job.
Remember, just like Clan tartans we have to accept them for what they are and just enjoy the "belonging" and get on with life.

That sounds suspiciously like volunteering, Jock.
I second your nomination.

And I third it!
Now, to get somebody from the "matchy" crowd on the committee - just to keep things interesting!
