Perhaps perplexed would have been more exact - having noticed it, and then checked to make sure, and looked at again and read the messages about it the thought 'Why he do that that way?' remained unanswered, so I just had to ask. 
And now I know. 
One way to keep the pleats neat when getting into a car is to take a piece of silk, satin, Rayon, Cire - anything slippery, large enough to cover the pleats and wrap it around your rear fairly tightly just before sliding into the seat. When you get out just slide, collecting up the fabric and leaving it in the door pocket handy for next time.
