Hello and a warm Celtic from the Hub of New England, Boston, Massachusetts.
Genealogy is almost as addictive as kilt wearing. Start by documenting yourself and work back one generation at a time. It is necessary to write or type all this down, so that you can keep track of what you have done and what you still need to do to keep track of who is who and where on the family tree. Between cousins and other rellies and my own history my database is over 29,000 people.
For your tartan questions, check out the tartan ferret on the website of the Scottish Tartan Authority@ http://www.tartansauthority.com .
