I agree with you about the sporran. I must say I rather liked his jacket, though. It is cut much longer than a typical kilt jacket, but seemed to work well with the ensemble. Perhaps because it was in matching tartan? When I picture it as a solid jacket, I don't think it would work as well.
It looks like a Saxon sportcoat to me. I think my grandfather had one just like that.
