On to news!
I met with my smith last night and was presented with the first CAD drawing of the #1 (round) cantle. There are a few small changes needed. The 'arm' of the hinge needs to be extended down past the body of the cantle, for one.
Otherwise, I'm fairly excited about the piece. It really hits home when you see the 3-D model animated to spin, open and close.



You may notice that the holes for lacing the bag, as well as the finials are not pictured. This is because they will be added after casting. This will allow me to vary the holes for different sizes of lacing. This may come in handy when changing bag materials from hair to leather, or for various thickness of leather. The finial holes will allow me to have just the one, three or five, or to attempt some of the 'trick' lock mechanisms.

Now to start harassing my smith for progress on #2 (and dare I ask, #3)

Unfortunately, the animation doesn't work without downloading the engine, which I don't want people to have to do. I'll see if the program can export an animated file instead of the still pix.

Edit: Do you mean you can't see the pic? Or that it is a static image with no animation?

I can see both, whether I'm logged into photobucket or not. What is everyone using for a browser? I'm on Firefox.

I switched to Firefox and I could see it but not on Explorer

Thanks, I've been trying to NOT get too excited, now that things are finally starting to move forward it's hard not to get a jones on.

Once everything gets cast up I've still got jigs to make to aid in drilling for lacing holes and finials, but that's pretty minor.

I've already found some very nice sources for long haired sheep to face some of the bags in, both brown and white, curly and straight hair.

My plan is to use either Elk for the leather bags, and I've got a reliable source for that as well.

Hopefully I'll see my smith again on Tuesday, when I can pressure him into making pattern #3 (rectangular) as well.

Will you be selling the cantles by themselves or just complete sporrans? I personally would like to make my own bags to mount to them.
