    Put cretins like that on the spot with this question:

    I'm usually not very good with quick comebacks and pithy remarks when on the spot (hindsight is 20/20) but I probably would have just pointed out the absurdity of his behavior by being equally absurd...

    "Look, everybody. This guy ISN'T wearing a dress!" "YOU'RE not wearing a dress!" "You catch my drift yet, buddy? What the hell's your point? No one really gives a rat's $#%@ what you think, do they? Everyone in the room has seen what I'm wearing and the only one who seems to think my KILT is a big deal is you."

    And if I were in a surly mood like I'm in this morning, I may have simply just said: "Is your mom proud of you that you turned out this way? Act your age and not your shoe size. Grow up!"

    (Yeah, I can hit pretty low sometimes.)

    As a side note, I guess I'm glad that here in Japan, spouses and guests are NEVER invited to company parties -- they are always for employees only. The Japanese, even on a regular, daily basis tend to be very secretive and closed about their families and personal lives. They will never discuss their spouses or children in public (unless they are already friends with you on a personal or deeper level), and they will never bring their spouses or children to "work" events.

    I'm with Alan, telling him a kilt is a type of skirt, but not a type of dress. It is a way to dress.

    Or, "Are you sure you want to f**k with the House of Gordon?

    And, I'm with the folks that think the guy managed to make an *** out of himself without your help.

    you have to do two things in a case like this;
    1. think of all the nice comments you got that evening.

    if that doesn't make you forget the @$$,

    2. think of what you would have done 300 years ago with your claymore

    Ah, just keep wearing it, sooner or later when you are not kilted some one will ask you why you are not, just like some one at church today. I told them most likely I would be wearing the kilt through the holidays, which seemed to appise them!

    Ron, I love your come back! I supose I could use "Lindsay's been spliting heads for the Stewarts for a long time, one more should't be too difficult".ith:

    I like Riverkilt's second reply!

    Recently, I have run into a surprising number of people who identify themselves as Gordons. That's a line that's likely to get some support in a crowd!
    EPITAPH: Decades from now, no one will know what my bank balance looked like, it won't matter to anyone what kind of car I drove, nor will anyone care what sort of house I lived in. But the world will be a different place, because I did something so mind bafflingly eccentric that my ruins have become a tourist attraction.

    I would have looked him straight in the eye and said "Nice blouse, is your wife wearing a matching one." My wife sometimes puts her head in her hands and says " Oh, my my". Her co-workers that like to kid around enjoy it, the ones that are snide have learned to steer clear.
