Sporran Strap for dress?

A leather strap with formal dress just looks wrong to me.

Funny, but I say the same for a chain strap.

I typically wear a chain strap with any sporran with a metal cantle. I just like the look.

Yeah, it's all a matter of taste. Whenever I see a chain with casual gear, I just think, "No, no, no, no NO!"

The only time I wear a chain sporran belt is when I wear my formal seal skin sporran. I do so because I think it looks better than with a leather belt.
If I wear a hair sporran to to a formal event I will however wear a leather belt because I think it looks better than with a chain belt.

I wouldn't wear a leather strap with one of those typical dress sporrans one sees these days (i.e. - sealskin, rabbit fur, etc), but for a hair sporran or a full-mask sporran I think it is perfectly fine!

Thanks to all for the varied responses. Everyone has their idea of what it should be. I, personally, prefer the chain strap only with a dress sporran. However, I really wouldn't mind a leather one with dress.

I would definitely be tempted to buy a very well finished strap for evening dress or day dress wear. What I envision would have very smooth rounded edges and a well burnished back, an edge bead all around, and a nice tooling design that runs the center of the front. The other essential element...and something that bugs me about most leather straps that I've seen on the market...is a QUALITY buckle...perhaps a semi-ornate one. It irks me that the majority of commercially available chain belts (excluding probably those that are priced in the $200+ range) have those chintzy stamped sheet metal buckles on them. Is it that much more expensive to put a nickle/chrome plated cast buckle on a sporran strap?

I have never given a moment's thought to the type of buckle on any of my sporran straps. Presumably they all do what they are intended to do, and since they really are not meant for display, who cares?

Just a thought here but I seem to remember seeing years ago a plain white leather sporran that was called a "military" sporran and it had a white leather strap with it. Please correct me here if I am mistaken. Also, couldn't a white leather strap be used for dress occasions?
