I'd like to have seen the reaction caused by either response.
That would be priceless!!

Drac, you did the right thing. I'll let someone call it a skirt because be definition it can be, but I correct them when they call it a dress. I told one cousin that called my kilt a dress that I knew he knew the difference and left it at that.
If someone wants to be thick just ignore them, they can't be helped.

I always reply...."Your mom left it on my bed" and then the trouble begins. For the most part I dont wear a kilt out too much due to the ignorant monkey population, but the few times I have, has indeed led to altercations, as I cant stand to be insulted, so due to the begging and pleadings of my wife I leave well enough alone now. But the above statement to them will shut them down fast.

I think I have to stand with Dale on this one. Very effective technique. I've seen it work, and I've used it to advantage. As he says, context, experience, and good instincts are relevant in the application. I also like a quick mouth, when I can pull it off. In an all-night diner, hunched over a sandwich, I was
noticed by the guy on the next stool. Grinning and chuckling, he elbowed his buddy and spun his stool toward me. "Hey. You got a date tomorrow night?"
I just made a sidelong response_"No, I don't think so, yet. What difference
does it make?" Much elbowing of buddy and laughing " 'cause I ain't either."
He and buddy laughing. I turned my stool to face him, squared up, popped the pecs, and said very quietly, "I don't know you. Maybe you like guys, and that's OK, but it happens I like girls". His buddy fell OFF his stool laughing at
him. It didn't hurt that at the time I was in a tie-dyed tank top worn on a
46" chest over a 26"waist, but I hadn't called him anything, hadn't hit him,
his own buddy was laughing at him, not me. I finished my sandwich. Not flashy or funny, but effective in the moment.

I have not been as fortunate with the individuals I have encountered. I am lucky that now I have a new hangout called McFarlane's Celtic Pub down the road, where even the staff wear Kilts!

Given the circumstances ("wearing a dress/skirt/etc."), I'm afraid I might have do a quick run through of the lyrics to Billy Connolly's "Evil Scotsman".
...and then tell the offending party, "Now hold my beer while I kiss your girlfriend."
But that's just me.

I will second that! That's what my instructors have been drumming into my skull, as well!!

Here's a thought-
What if Drac, upon hearing the "dress" remark, had acted as happy as he could be, pulled up his shirt, gave the guy a big bear-chested man hug, and thanked him for noticing, saying, "I wore this just for you."
