What if Drac, upon hearing the "dress" remark, had acted as happy as he could be, pulled up his shirt, gave the guy a big bear-chested man hug, and thanked him for noticing, saying, "I wore this just for you."
    I'd pay to see that

Insulting comments don't just come from people you run into. A short while ago the morning host on a local talk radio program mentioned that he was in Montreal as a head table guest at a media event. Then he went on to mention that a bagpiper making a loud noise and wearing a dress piped them to the head table. Media types have been fired for much less most recently PBS.

Sadly, bagpipes are often on the business end of ridicule, usually by the same people who yell "nice skirt".

...And by pipers. Know the definition of perfect pitch? It's when a set of bagpipes, an accordion, and a banjo are all thrown in a dumpster at once, without hitting each other or the sides.

Hate to say it, but we're an easy target all around...I doubt a talk radio host is going to end up outside for a comment like that, particularly since talk radio hosts get paid to be...well, abrasive.

It is amazing how far some actually are able to cross the line, and stay on the air. For some, it seems the more people they offend, the higher their ratings.

    hmm

I tend to respond in the most sincere voice I can muster. "Oh, no I understand now, you have an interest in men in dresses. Don't get me wrong, I'm flattered and respect your choices, wow, this is embarrassing, I'm so sorry you misunderstood, this is a kilt." That usually shuts them up, and makes them look stupid.

DISCLAIMER - I have nothing against anyone who may have such an interest in reality, I just use this because it gets to the heart of the insecurity that makes stupid things come out of peoples mouths. I know, I'm using my powers for evil.

To me, that kind of behavior on the part of on-air personalities is one of the things that contributes to the general perception that it's okay for the loudmouthed "wit" that took a verbal poke at Drac to mouth off. People see and hear this kind of thing in the media and it gives them the idea that it's the way it's supposed to work so they feel free to imitate the "bad boys" and "morning zoo" actors and behave in what they think is a funny way that's pretty uncivil and downright anti-social. I've spoken about the "Ferris Buehler's Day Off" syndrome several times: suburban kids come into Chicago and seem to think that it's some kind of amusement park where they can come and act all wacky and kooky and be rude and insult people and it's all just in good fun...except it's not.

This is what we're left with...anybody with a microphone in front of them or a camera on them becomes a model for a mode of behavior.

There's a country song about what you can and can't talk about. At the end the singer informs the listener that the 1st Amendment protects you from the goverment not him.

It also makes us regular morning show guys get lumped in with them. I hate it when someone puts me in the same boat with Howard Stern, who is a no talent @$$. (at least in my 33 years of radio experience. You may find him quite entertaining.)

We're easy targets because we're white, not to put too fine a point on it. What if the DJ were to make fun of a black man in a dashiki- monkey in a dress? I can gaurantee he would be fired before his broadcast was over. And yet... it's perfectly OK to do it to us. I'm not at all sure I understand how that works...
