I saw an ingenious design of a mitten with an overlapped slot across the palm so the fingers could be freed and the finger end of the mitten folded back out of the way - I think there was a loop at the end and a button at the wrist to keep it neat.
With the top folded back they covered about the same amount of the hand as the fingerless gloves.
Once the task was completed the fingers were easily covered again - even if numb with cold.
The original pattern was knitted plain, but I'm sure the concept could be adapted to patterned to good effect if required.
