    I have worn a long coat over my kilt and jacket but find that laird's/day plaid actually works just as well, even at -20C (at least for this long-time Canadian prairie resident). I can wrap myself in it, and still have it fall below the knees in front, keeping all of me quite comfortable. And folks seem invariably impressed by the look...
