I'm wondering how large the under apron pleats are on your new kilt.
In the example given of Xman you can see how the under apron pleat opens up to allow for either lifting a foot or sitting down due to the amount of extra fabric available from the pleat beneath the apron.
I make my own kilts and just those two pleats and the shaping of the aprons takes over a yard of fabric. It does mean that I can vault over gates and climb stiles fearlessly. When sitting down, even though I do not wear a sporran, the aprons fall vertically rather than remaining in a towel-like horizontal mode.
