    Hello From NC

Greetings from Tobaccoville, NC! I recently inhereted my Uncle's regalia and need some info about it and how to wear it. The kilt is Hunting Stewart with all the trappings. He even had both the gray casual jacket and the black formal. All the items are 20+ years old but in almost perfect condition and of excellent quality. I can wear the Stewart and Gordon. My middle name is Stewart.

I have already found useful information on this site. Great stuff.

    Thanks for being here!

    Welcome to the forum...

congrats on your recent "inheritance". You are, indeed, lucky. I hope you learn as much from this forum as I have.

As a start, I'd like to comment on your remark "I can wear the Stewart and Gordon. My middle name is Stewart." My comment would be...there's really no requirements to wear a particular tartan unless it is one of the few tartans that are categorized as "restricted". Hunting Stewart and Royal Stewart are both generally accepted as "universal" tartans...as is Black Watch (and many, many others). Gordon, due to it's military connection, is also commonly worn by many people with no connection to "Clan Gordon". In short, I'm not sure about the basis of your statement (ie. have you traced your lineage back to those clans or is it just because somebody in your family had the name "Stewart" or "Gordon")...and I'm not questioning your entitlement to wear either of the tartans you mention. What I AM saying is...don't get wrapped around the idea of what people are allowed or not allowed to wear. Most people wearing the kilt these days have a very loose association and lineage with any clan tartan they may be wearing. Wear a kilt of your choosing and have fun!!!

    Again...welcome to the forum.

If you want to read more about universal tartans, here's one thread (of many): Universal tartans
