Single Men and Kilts

I can understand,...but I'm single and not in the kilt or date game anymore

I had an unusual experience today, also relating to women and kilts. I did some piping new years day. No formal gigs, I just made the rounds to friends houses that I knew would be home and enjoy the pipes. The two most memorable:

Joe and Alberta were first. They're in their eighties and absolutely wonderful people. I drove up, got the pipes out of my trunk and proceeded to play. Pretty soon Joe came to the door and invited me in. Grabbed the small pipes and headed inside. Played a few more tunes in their kitchen and had about an hour visit. After knowing Joe for years, I found out he loves the pipes so much because he was in a bit of a pickle somewhere in Europe and heard the pipes. The cavalry was coming. Ten years later, the same thing happened in Korea. Some unit of the Royal Army showed up to dig out some Yanks. His last request of the day was Amazing Grace. In his kitchen. On the big pipes.

Then came Eunice. She's XX years old (nobody but her is quite sure and she's not talking) and a transplanted Brit. After 30 years here in the midwest, she still sounds as if she's just arrived. Played a couple tunes for her and visited for about ten minutes.

More about Eunice, and the point of this post. She asks me today if I have any pictures of me in my kilt, she'd like to BUY some! Of course I'm going to just give them to her, but never underestimate the power of a kilt, even on women of "a certain age".

I'm a married guy, but I'm not dead. I enjoy the attention from the womenfolk. Beside the obvious ego boost, us married guys' "stock value" goes up at home when we get those looks out and about. And the dividends pay well.

The kilt and wearer certainly get some attention form the fairer sex. At (just) 63 and single I can confirm this. It is not just ladies of the similar age either ......

In London, kilts seem to rarely raise an eyebrow. Within 10 minutes of seeing one you will walk past someone wearing arabic african or indian traditional dress. Not to mention punks/goths with 6" high blue/yellow mohican haircuts, 'distressed' clothes and boots with 4" inch soles! What is now unusual is the old 'city' dress of bowler brolly and pinstripes..............

Not my experience of London... yes you get the world of costume walking by in a few minutes, but when I and my partner are kilted we get lots of compliments and photo shots wanted. We get attention from the ladies indeed, but in our Soho haunts around Old Compton Street and The Duke of Wellington, we get even more compliments from hunky guys too! Well this is our Gay Village, we wouldn't expect less.

Off topic I suppose, but I work with a guy who had that same experience!

He's a US Army veteran of the Korean war. He was a paratrooper, a Ranger. (His father jumped on D-Day in Normandy, so it runs in his family!)

He told me the story of freezing in the snow, behind enemy lines, running low on ammunition and all other supplies, the North Koreans or Chinese making their racket every night. When all seemed hopeless, one day, when it was eerily silent, these Rangers thought they were imagining something, a strange noise in the distance.

As this noise got louder, they realised it was bagpipes.

It dawned on them: help was at hand! They shouted for joy "the Limeys are coming! The Limeys are coming!"

Well it was not the English of course but the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, the only troops Britain had to send to Korea at the beginning, as they were stationed in Hong Kong.

Back to topic, yes when I was a young single lad the kilt and the pipes were always a hit with the ladies! A piper rarely needs to go home alone.

Married over 20 years now, to a lovely lady to likes men in kilts!

Really? Two years ago I had a hard time getting a 36" waist strapped in, now a 31" will get me, own a successful business and don the kilt regularly and I haven't gotten so much as a quick glance. Where are you finding such good fortune?

1. I have never before spoken to so many women before being kilted.
2. It's a real chick magnet.
3. Only now, I am married, Happily.
4. Husbands and boyfriends do not always like the allure of the kilt.

I was in Atlaantic City for new years, kilted. I got a lot of positive comments from women. I also got a couple reallyt crude comments and was groped while in the bar area of the casino. Wearing my Grandfather's retirement badge from the MPDC as a kilt pin is a help. After the women removed her hand from under my kilt, I turned around and the first thing she saw was the badge. Wake Up Call. But all in all, the comments brought smiles. I think my wife was getting upset at the attention I was getting. But in the end, I go home with her. Whether she likes it or not.
