I have become addicted to making kilts..although I still suck at it, and don't have my copy of Barb's book yet..I've got four simple kilts that I made...two of them are pretty much X-kilts, except I made it up as I went along...both are box pleated, one is made of jean weight twill, and one is made of carrhart canvas...both indestructible....it takes me a couple evenings to make one...if you are so inclined, it is very satisfying to wear a kilt you have made..and you can make it out of what you want...I don't think I have more than 25 bucks in one...

Great idea...Except I can't even replace a button that has fallen off a shirt. Translation: I can't sew.

I bought an 8 yard PV kilt from buyakilt.com last year for hiking and the likes...

It has been quite serviceable and cost all of $40 GBP...

I think it would also make a good starter kilt for someone not yet committed to wearing a kilt, without having to shell out the bucks for a proper wool one.

This sound like one that I should add to the list to consider.

p.s. I'm not looking for a starter kilt, just a new, cheap, durable one that I can beat up.

Methinks the kilt you're describing is a Utilikilt in denim. Know you said no to a Utilikilt - still, a denim UK describes what you're looking for - save price. Had a denim UK original and it just got better and better the more I wore it and washed it. Thought I saw UK was making a denim kilt again.

I get the impression it's not the utilikilt per se, it's the lack of any sort of "tartan" pattern that it and other canvas kilts suffer from -- hence no "monocolor" kilts regardless of material will fit the bill.

Sportkilt can be had with straps and buckles for a few extra bucks, but by then you're passing the price of most casuals. I own one SK and probably won't buy another. They aren't bad, just not the buy they first appear to be.

I would still cast my vote for a USAK casual. I have two and can tell you that they are easy to take care of, look good enough to go out in, wear well, are fit to your own backside(unlike SK, SWK, etc) and are very comfortable. I wash mine on the delicate cycle and hang dry with a clothespin on the corners of the pleats or just lay it out really flat. A bit of touch up ironing is all I ever have to do, and has never taken more than five minutes.

I won't speak for Rocky, but adding a single strap and buckle to be sure it stays closed isn't a big deal and he may do it for you...but you'd have to ask him. And don't worry about it looking odd with one strap...ever look at one of Matt Newsome's box pleat kilts? The left strap is inside and hidden from view and there is usually only one on the right. It's perfectly fine.

What about a belt? When I'm out in the boonies(though not doing anything as wild as the Warrior Dash) I just throw a BDU belt or a duty belt on. I can hang off the things so it's plenty secure and they aren't expensive at all.

I know that swinging, running or jumping through flames is often a part of the dash, so I would avoid arcylic kilts like SWK standards and such. I can tell you from experience(as can Nighthawk and a few others) that the stuff BURNS AND MELTS readily compared to PV and other materials. I was lucky I got out of mine as quickly as I did and only had 1st degree and mild 2nd degree burns(and had to re-grow some hair!!). Just my experience...my $.02USD. Your mileage may vary.

Ever since I first heard about the dash I've wanted to do it, but it won't happen until way after my knee surgery. Hiking and such are hard enough, and I shouldn't be doing that anyhow, but I can't push it Warrior Dash hard without winding up in the hospital again. Good luck!!

I bought an 8 yard PV kilt from buyakilt.com last year for hiking and the likes. It is in the Scottish National tartan. I am not sure where the PV is milled, but it is thicker and coarser than the Marton Mills PV, though not fuzzy like acrylic.

Pakistan. I looked at the their offerings and their 'budget kilt' range is all the same exact tartan list and material description of kilts from Pakistan. Not knocking it, just clarifying.

I have only thought of two things.

One, I own a bunch of wool garmets and I own two pairs of Carhartts. I have decades of experience with denim. I have never owned anything in wool that comes close to the durability of denim, and I have never owned anything in denim that comes close the durability of Carhartts.

Second, if someone decides to point man on it, I would likely sign up for five yards single width on a universal sett made of blue denim thread, with black, khaki and green carhartt thread. Maybe something to fit like a UK with simple box pleats in the yet to be created "Xmarks rugged"?

Amerikilt has a new Carhartt "saffron" kilt that would probably fit the bill for durability.
