I had purchased garter ties from Matt at the Tartan Museum and stopped using flashes.

After Arlen's post and asking my wife to try making me ties following Arlen's directions. She has now made me 5 pair. After the first couple of pair she made when I was away for a week, we went shopping for more yarn. We found a variegated yarn with gold, rust, black and purple. It made a gorgeous garter tie with the multicolored fringe. It looks great with the black and brown Rob Roy sporran I bought from Joe Gondek last month.

Garter ties are the way to go. Thanks Arlen for the directions.
