Hmmm where is the step? This soap box is rather high.
    Appreciate the shout out.

This thread simply underlines the fact that there are as many opinions as there are kilt-wearers.
But for my money the hat to wear with the kilt is the tam o’shanter.
Why? Simply because in my regiment the officers wore balmorals, and the men wore tammies.
Maybe I felt the balmoral was too like a beret (we wore berets during our initial training, before joining the regiment, and so did our [mostly unpopular] instructors).
I did once favour wearing a deerstalker cap. In fact, I have had about half a dozen different ones, which I wore for about three decades. But I have never worn one with the kilt, and I no longer possess one.
The flat cap has never been my choice of headgear.
But it is entirely a matter of personal choice.
    Regards,
    Mike

I like flatcaps, and would wear one with a kilt, however I don't own one.
Most of the time I wear a nice navy blue Toque that I picked up in Canada about 8 years ago with my kilt. (looks like a fitted wool baseball cap without the brim)

This morning/afternoon I met up with RB51 on this side of the border for coffee. Both of us kilted & I was being rather non-traditional in my newsboy/flatcap.....(just don't tell Jock )

    flatcap flap

You never have to worry about wearing a flatcap, unless you stole it.
