These comments about Americans wearing their sporrans too low surprise me. I suppose I may be one of those who may do this occasionally. When I began wearing the kilt, I was told to allow a hand's-width between the belt and the sporran, which I do sometimes, but not always. If this is wrong, then I have been corrected. But, when I look at all the vintage photos posted by OC Richard of Scots wearing the sporran, I see sporrans hanging just as low.

Me too, I've never really questioned this before, and now I can't seem to decide exactly where my sporran should hang.
