the sleaved green waistcoat at the bottom of the page was one i was looking at. Do you think this would be ok?
As a common clansman's jacket, that would work great. A clan gentleman's coat would have fancier turn-back cuffs and skirting....

Maybe I should start a separate thread for this, but it kind of fits here.

    Brian,
    Or anyone who would know,
Who is a good source to procure a correct sporran for the 1740s/50s? I found one, but it just doesn't look quite right to my eye from the paintings I have seen, and research I have done. Also, what books would you recommend for further research of some of the finer details of highland clothing from this era. It seems the research is tougher going in this area and period. I am use to victorian era research, which there is plenty of documentation, as well as the advantage of photos.

Hmmm the best place i know of would be....

    http://circleofgentlemen.info/shop/sporrans/

Most of them are not cheap to say the least but they are pretty spot on. The cunningham sporran is the one i went for as its the most basic, Which is good for my garb. As for books im not sure. Your best best is to talk to other re-enactors etc. Thats what i did anyway.

What a great thread! Most informative to a newbie such as myself. I concur with the re-inactors here when you say the spectators want to see the fancier dress. I used to do the single action shooting thing some years ago. I chose to dress as a humble cowpoke of the 1880's, as accurate as possible, but the spectators flocked to the "Hollywood" saturday morning western show dressed folks, complete with silver mounted double buscadero rigs and such.

I am reminded of a similar experience at a living history event where our NPS artillery crew was set up next to a reenactor unit for hourly artillery demos. The reenactor crew was literaly covered in red -- red shirts, red trim, red chevrons --and none of them were ordinary rankers. The lowest rank was a corporal, I kid you not.

Our crew was the exact opposite -- no red trim, just plain forage caps and fatigue/sack coats, and even our gunner was a "slick sleeve". Of course, the touristas flocked to the reenactor crew, but I did hear one young man ask his Dad, who was obviously a career military man, why the one gun crew had all the red and the other didn't.

The father said, "The guys with the red are the newbies -- they haven't learned that all that red is a good target. The guys with no trim are the veterans."
