I think the other posters have covered all the bases, to whit:

1) Kilt should come to the top of the knee;
2) Sporran should be a bit higher;
3) As soon as possible get some coloured hose-- people have been shot for wearing white hose (search Boston Corbet for details ;));
4) Avoid tartan ties and tartan pocket squares;
5) Polish your shoes until they shine like glass!

And to the above, I would add a tie when wearing a jacket and waistcoat.
