Mike is right, there isn't a Cumbria or Cumberland (the old name for the county) tartan but there is a Solway Spirit. (Click the image within the link for a bigger picture).
The Solway Firth, as I'm sure you know, is the bit of the Irish Sea that separates England from Scotland and to be more specific, Cumbria (English) from Dumfries and Galloway (Scottish).
The tartan is exclusive to "Anderson's Kilts" (Google it) in Dumfries, woven solely by Lochcarron and really is nice... nay, really, really nice.

The Solway Firth tartan, reminiscent of Isle of Skye but a much deeper purple. (picture is an STA mock-up)
I have a proper picture of a chap from Dumfries called Craig wearing it but can't access my pics at the mo, apologies, I'll see if I can find it when I get home next week... There is also an X Marker from Spain (who's name escapes me just now, apologies again) who also has a Kilt in it.
It's primarily for the Dumfries side of the water obviously but as it's a district (fashion) tartan celebrating a shared boundry, I'm sure no-one would have a gripe about a chap of Cumbrian root wearing it too.
You don't need people like me "helping you" do you? It just makes the wish list longer and the anguish greater. Sorry!

The surname Newsome is said to have originated in Yorkshire. There is no "Yorkshire district tartan" but just as the Duke of Fife tartan is generally worn as "Fife District" and the Earl of Inverness tartan is often worn as "Inverness district" I decided the Duke of York tartan would work for this purpose.
This tartan is also called Earl of Inverness Hunting.

I have more detailed information about this kilt and my choice of tartan on my blog, here.
One of these days I'll get round to making myself a kilt from a 5 yard length of Harris Tweed I have in the Shepherd's Check, which is also the Northumberland tartan.

Thanks, John, for the Solway Spirit suggestion.
And Matt, I like your choice of Duke of York.
There is, however, also a tartan called Spirit of Yorkshire, and one for Yorkshire County Cricket.
Regards,
Mike
