Then my personal recommendation would be a kilt, dress Argyll jacket, four-in-hand tie, plain hose, either a leather or dress sporran, and leather brogues (not ghillies).

When in doubt, dress just a tad better than the Lowlanders!

In kilt attire terms the black,silver buttoned, barathea argyll is really formal day wear(morning coat equivalent) and it is quite acceptable for that attire to be continued to be worn into the evening by wedding guests who had started the day at a day time wedding.As would Tweed kilt attire. Personally, I would wear a white shirt to an event such as a wedding, particularly with the black argyll option.

the jacket, shirt & tie should be day wear, but the accessories can touch it up a little.

That, I think, is a misreading of the styles of that time. These are not men in Day Dress with their dress touched up by wearing formal sporrans. We must remember that our modern small leather pocket Day sporrans did not exist at that time, and long hair sporrans were universally worn with all modes of dress. So the long hair sporrans these men are wearing were the Day Dress sporrans of their time. They had no other, save for animal mask sporrans and 100-year-old antique 18th century sporrans, neither of which were nearly as popular as the universal long hair sporrans.

Yes I am aware that the dress was different then than now. I was merely using that historic example to express my idea. The leather cantles on their sporrans are the dead giveaway that they are intended for day dress. Considering that the sporran I want to wear has a metal cantle, I'm thinking of jazzing up the jacket to silver buttoned Argyll. I'm also leaning heavily to Claret hose.

White shirt it is. Although most guests will be in business dress, I don't want too much discrepancy between my brothers and myself so adopting a slightly more formal dress to fit with them, but not too far apart from the other guests.

I'm thinking the safest bet for an event that goes from the day into the evening would be an Argyll jacket (with or without waistcoat), regular tie, and metal cantle hunting sporran or full mask sporran.

'Xactly. Waistcoat or waist plate is my only consideration then now and that will depend more on the weather that day I think. I can get four toes in my hand incidentally, but that's a discussion for another day perhaps.
