So...as to those reproduction tartans...will they ever be available in a heavier weight or would it be possible to ask for a custom order of one of them in a heavier weight?

See the link below for a Dalgliesh heavyweight custom-run in (mostly) reproduction colors. For the yellow in the thread count of the tartan I substituted a gold in place of the "khaki green" color that Dalgliesh uses for yellow in their Reproduction color scheme. Just another example of the great importance of having a tartan mill who will be responsive to customer's requests.

I've said it before, but I have yet to find tartan that is better than Dalgliesh's, bar none.

Now that you mention it, I did follow that thread...just spaced on the fact that it was Dalgliesh who did the work...but who else would it be, eh?

Just that I've been craving something in a five or six yard kilt for somewhat more casual wear and that Reproduction Hunting Robertson would be just the ticket...13 or 16 ounce fabric would make it a lot better.

My hands-down favorite combination for a kilt!

If you do have it custom woven, be careful in deciding on sett size/thread count. Hunting Robertson has a very wide sett(white line to white line), and wide setts result in fewer pleats. I find that low-yardage knife-pleat kilts look best pleated to the line when the sett size is around 5 inches.

    Best of luck!

The Robertson Hunting is a Black Watch variant, and when I pleat any Black Watch varaint to stripe, I typically pleat to whatever stripe is repeated 2x per set. So, for the Robertson Hunting, that would be the red stripe. For the MacKenzie tartan (which is identical to the Robetson Hunting except the red/white stripes are reversed) it's the white stripe.

I did a Robertson Hunting kilt once pleated to the white stripe -- it was a box pleat and had very wide pleats at that. I wouldn't reccomend it normally.

In any case, if you wanted the kilt pleated to the white stripe, yes, having it woven in a small sett would help that. Otherwise, I'd normally pleat to the red stripe, and the standard sett size should be fine.

Oh, it'd have to be pleated to the red stripe...I wouldn't have it any other way...besides, it'd have to match the two that are already here: Ancient Hunting and Ancient Hunting Muted.
