What Happened to the Picture of the Month?
I remember back in December/January, there was a thread discussing the picture of the month. There was some discussion about establishing the ground rules for each month's pictured theme with the expectation that participants went out that month to get a picture meeting the guidelines...
Did we let that go? Admittedly, my favorite threads are the picture threads, so I was looking forward to seeing all the responses to the Picture of the Month.
If the issue was not to choose a "winner", we could possibly do a monthly thread where the guidelines are established with the opening post and then all participants can just add a picture post to the thread showing how they met the guidelines. Would there be any interest in something of this sort?

We had a Photo of the Month and it was a feature of the forum for almost a year.
After a while we were not getting entries. It seemed that people lost interest.
Perhaps later this summer we can turn the feature back on and try again.

Thanks Steve. I wondered if that was the case.

Speaking solely for myself, I found that the categories were a little too narrow to allow everyone to participate in a given month. One, for example, had to do with fall foliage. Many of us live in areas where there is no such thing as fall foliage. Other categories like kilted wedding pictures would also exclude a lot of members from being able to enter that month.
I would love to see the monthly photo contests come back. But I think there would be better participation if the categories were more broad. I know it would kind of limit the amount of uniqueness that could be done each month, but it would be of more general interest if everybody could enter each month.
What about categories that have more to do with the style of photo than seasonal/event-related photos? Like, maybe, one month could be the best artistic pleat shots. Another month could be for the most interesting background or environment for wearing the kilt. Another month could be for the most unique and tasteful color combinations of accessories.
Just a thought!

Perhaps there is another way of looking at this? Rather than having a specific thread and theme, why don't the mods just pick the "best" picture out the "picture thread" for the month?

This is what I would like to see. As a non daily kilt wearer, I really was not able to participate because I only wear a kilt once or twice a year. It is tough to find pictures that specific for someone like myself.

I like that idea... In other words, any photo submitted during that month would automatically become eligible to win best photo for that month.
The only potential problem I can see with that is the administration though. Most of us are pretty busy, the least whom the mods -- do we really want to add that to their list of responsibilities as well?

When there are not many entries it's difficult to make a choice and would be unfair for those who enter every month to keep on winning by default.
I personally (Mod Hat off!) quite like Jock's idea, though with the proviso that members may also nominate a picture for consideration.
It could be worth a try anyway.

It could be done by the membership. From nomination to the final vote.

Now that is an idea I like.
