Gmhg '09
As a Stone Mountain Games veteran, my family and I are looking forward with anticipation to Grandfather Mountain '09.
It looks like there is much more to do than simply watch the games. Is this true? I intend to run the BEAR if can. Anyone here do that one yet?
We will be staying in town, but plan on spending all 4 days on the mountain.

Yes, there's MUCH more to da than watch the games, although I hope no one misses out on them. There are a multilplicity of bands, singers, craft demonstrations, border collie demos, scads of vendors, muchos tents, and 50,000 of your closest friends, all of whom are anxious to meet you and compare sporrans, hose, brogues and whatever else can be compared.
My father-in-law ran the Bear once. He used to be a long-distance runner, running all the way across Florida once. I've never run it because I'm too lazy.
Come on up to Grandpappy this year. It's worth the drive, in my opinion, although I've never had any of the vexations of other posters in this thread.

I must admit that a casual reader of the thread might be utterly discouraged. I might not even consider attending the Grandfather Mountain games, but I have heard so many things for so many years at the other games. I want my kids to have the experience.
I am sorry that many of the Clans find it either too costly or too logistically complex to be worth coming out. Has this always been the case or has there been some change in the games in the last few years?
Ever since I was a kid, I have always hear about Grandfather Mountain s the Premier games in the US. When at Stone Mountain or in FLA, I always heard things like , "you like this?... You have to do Grandfather Mountain." I'm popping for 4-day tickets for the whole family. I do hope It is worth it. I know the rest of our time there will be fun. We will be in town for 7 days.

Consider camping on the mountain. It's a great time - as good or better than the games themselves, although they go hand in hand. Nice thing is that you walk from your tent to the games aite, rather than shuttling up amid the traffic.

Turpin,
I would, but we got an offer to use a condo for the week. Can't turn down that one. We will certainly consider camping if we go back after this year.
