So WHAT IS the purpose of a Skian Dhub?

I was attacked a while back by a group of five youths. I'm no martial artist, but something kicked in from a few decades before and, after a couple of them were grounded with blooded noses and dented egos, one of the others grabbed at the nearest bit of road furniture and tried to use it on me from a safer distance. At that point I decided that, never having smoked, I might just get away quicker than they could give chase, despite being more than twice their age.
If I had had a knife - for that IS what a Skian Dhub IS - then I am sure that if it had ended up out of my hose it would have been used by whoever could get at it. I'd rather not give anyone that advantage.
Cheers, Graham.
PS No - I wasn't kilted at the time!

How did the question go from should I wear a Skian Dubh to church to can you skin a deer with your Leatherman? Does the word inane come to anyone's mind?

Yes. Right after reading your post. You obviously missed the point of my teasing Jamie about his comparing a 20th century multi-tool to a sgian dubh.

Fine by me, just so long as someone else's "sense of courtesy" doesn't impinge on my ability to wear my sgian dubh where ever I please.

I have chosen not to wear any knives since 9/11. I used to carry a swiss army knife in a holder with a small flashlight. As a service tech, I had access to several federal buildings along with a lot of customers that had federal contracts. I had to keep putting the case back into the truck. Lots of hassle. I also opted not to carry anything that could be construed as a weapon in respect to those that have been injured by such weapons. Just a few weeks ago, I started carrying my swiss army knife in my cell phone pouch. I still hve trouble with carrying a knife. When I am kilted, I do not carry a knife.
Plus, the doctors has not given me permission to carry anything sharp. Not yet, at least. Maybe soon, though.

You didn't have a sgian dubh or a pen knife; he had a brick. Ban bricks.

Back on-topic, and this one has been severely beaten to death (but I 've been itchin' to have my say) lol... I have worn my sgian to church without incident, and would do so in the future. Now, if I were asked not to (whether it be politely or not), it would indicate to me a symptom of a far larger concern and a set of priorities that would compel me to most likely re-consider my choice of churches. I would prefer to find a church where people are more concerned about the content of my heart rather than the object in my sock. If people are uncomfortable with my sgian, then they will also most likely be uncomfortable with other aspects of my attire and character.
Unless I am causing offense to God or acting in a way that offends people in general, I will not change my customs and behaviors out of deference to a few cracked pots that have personal issues they just need to work out on their own but yet, find it necessary to project onto others, making it THEIR problem as well.

I find it interesting the points of view of why not to carry a weapon, including the example of 9/11.. The reality of life is there are always going to be those who wish to do ill against others for their own gains.. remove the means to protect the innocent and it embolden the wrong doers..
The simple question is about wearing a sgain to church.. do you or do you not... that is a personal issue, that can only be answered by the individual due to their current circumstances.. those of us can respond to our own preferences.. but to an individuals circumstances.. we are not necessarily privy to them..
Make your choices, follow your heart, and do what you feel is right for your circumstances..wear it or not.. there is no right or wrong.. as long as you make your choice with a good heart..

If I did that with everything I've seen used as a weapon over the years I'd have to stay in my pajamas and never leave the house!
I was looking over this thread with my wife, and she said she always felt there was a bit of rebellion inherent in kilt wearing, so its hard to understand all the hoplophobia and PC stuff.
