    Nathan's Kilt Fund

This may be too long and if it violates forum rules,,,sorry. But several folks from different groups have asked about donating by credit card,,particularly those overseas....here you go,,along with an update on progress
    R

This is a pass it along to any that might be interested.
The petition is over 1600, from the four corners of the earth, literally. A Celtic organization in Florida has donated a Prince Charlie jacket,,so we are getting close to having the laddie kitted out for the Senior Prom when the time comes. Next question is will the School Board be reasonable and see it our way....or are we going the have to invade Jackson, MO. ,,,,,assuming we can find it!! :-))) (owwww,,,that was tacky,,,,slaps self on hand)

    Royce,

I am part of a group called The New World Celts here in Florida. We have been involved with the Nathan Warmack story also. I have a store here in Dunedin FL that wants to donate a Prince Charlie jacket to Nathan. How do I contact him? We are behind his cause and want to support him as best we can.

Scottish pride turns to dance ban
    December 21, 2005 - 12:18AM

Nathan Warmack wore a kilt to a high school dance wanting to honour his Scottish heritage - but the principal told him to change into a pair of trousers.
What began with a few metres of tartan in Missouri has sparked a debate about freedom, symbols and cultural dress in the United States.

More than 1600 people have signed an internet petition seeking an apology for the student.

"It's a kilt. It's going to turn heads, but I never believed it would have become what it is," Warmack said.

"I had a teacher say you weren't really wearing it to honour your heritage. You were wearing it for the reaction. No, I wasn't," he said.

Warmack said his interest in his family's Scottish ties was sparked by Mel Gibson's 1995 movie Braveheart, about William Wallace's battle to overthrow English rule in 13th century Scotland.

Warmack reads books about Scotland and checks websites to learn more about his family's genealogy.

Then, he bought a kilt off the internet to wear to his school's formal dance in November.

Warmack said he showed it to a vice principal before the dance, who joked he'd better wear something underneath it, and Warmack assured him he would.

His parents, Terry and Paula, helped him piece together the rest of his outfit, a white shirt and black tie with white socks and black boots.

After Nathan and his date posed for pictures, Principal Rick McClard, who had not previously seen the kilt, told the student he had to go and change. Warmack refused.

Several Scottish heritage organisations in the US are angry, pointing out that a kilt is a symbol of Scottish pride and considered formal dress.

    US school principal bans kilt

When Nathan Warmack wore a Scottish kilt to a high school dance in Jackson, Missouri, the student wasn't trying to make a point. He just wanted to honour his heritage.

But then a principal told him to change into a pair of trousers, and what began with a few yards of tartan has sparked a debate about freedom, symbols and cultural dress.

More than 1,600 people have signed an internet petition seeking an apology for the student.

"It's a kilt. It's going to turn heads, but I never believed it would have become what it is," Warmack said.

Warmack said his interest in his family's Scottish ties was sparked by Mel Gibson's 1995 movie Braveheart.

He bought a kilt on the internet to wear to his school's formal
Silver Arrow dance. Warmack claims the principal then ordered him to change, saying: "This is my dance and I'm not going to have students coming into it looking like clowns."

McClard later said he had no recollection of saying that.

Highlanders support kilt ban pupil Dec 20 2005

An American student banned from wearing a kilt to his high school dance has won the support of a Highland community.

Nathan Warmack, 18, from Missouri, was told to change into trousers by the school principal when he turned up wearing the tartan.

An online petition was launched demanding an apology from Jackson High head Rick McClard, drawing more than 1,600 signatures.

[To what Highlanders was the article referring?] ;-)

    Highlanders support kilt ban pupil
An American student banned from wearing a kilt to his high school dance has won the support of a Highland community.

Nathan Warmack, 18, from Missouri, was told to change into trousers by the school principal when he turned up wearing the tartan.

An online petition was launched demanding an apology from Jackson High head Rick McClard, drawing more than 1,600 signatures.

The figure was boosted by residents of Caithness after a local councillor posted a link to the petition on a community website.

Bill Fernie, councillor for Wick West, said: "One of the leaders of Clan Gunn over in America contacted me and asked me to highlight what had happened to the community here. [NOTE: He's referring to Royce Perry.]

"Caithness is the home of the clan so he thought that people here might be interested in showing their support for their petition. It's something that a lot of people feel quite strongly about."

Warmack became interested in his Scottish heritage after watching Mel Gibson play hero William Wallace in the film Braveheart. He bought a kilt in red MacRae tartan on the internet and wore it with a shirt and tie and to his school's formal dance.

He claimed that the principal ordered him to change, telling him that he did not want anyone at the dance looking like a clown.

Members of the Clan Gunn Society of North America launched the petition on November 19.

It reads: "How could a person who works with kids on a daily basis not see the importance of self-esteem and the courage it takes young people to show pride in their families' heritages? We truly hope Mr. McClard finds the courage to apologise to Nathan Warmack. He deserves an apology."
