As far as I am aware Hughston McBain of McBain came into the chiefship of Clan McBain by right of inheritance, not by election of an ad hoc derbhfine.
He was also the chief who approached Astronaut Alan Bean to carry a bean of MacBean tartan with him on the Apollo 12 mission.

Since my own direct male-line ancestry can't be traced before about 1816 (in New Orleans), I have arms that I designed and assumed myself about 15 years ago. I wanted the arms to be simple and direct, with no conflict with known arms.
"Sable, a Jerusalem Cross Or".
I think that's simple enough. I have never seen anything it might conflict with. I still have not settled on crest nor motto, though I have several ideas kicking around. I may end up with assumed supporters, as well.

Phil,
I like it...I am in a similar boat and am now getting my arms registered with South Africa. They have been great to work with if you are interested in doing such a thing.

Hi Phil,
"Sable, a Jerusalem Cross Or" is certainly a minimalist design - I would be surprised if it didn't aready exist somewhere.

It might very well do, but if it is a different authority then it really doesn't matter. And seeing how the US doesn't have an authority to start with, it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks, Mike.
I am a large corporation, it seems No, seriously - I don't think I would do that, after all. I still need a crest, and a motto, though. I think an arm holding a trident (Naval Service) might work for the crest. I have been trying to find the translation for "Run and find out" as a motto.
Cheers!

Phil,
If you don't mind me asking, what did you do in the Navy. (I come from a Navy Air Force Family and joined the Army...go figure.)
Also how were you thinking about expressing the Run and find out? Latin, Gaelic.....
PS...I am new at heraldry and have been developing a keen interest in it. The guys on here have REALLY given me an education. So, pardon my questions they are a matter of curiosity ..

Oh, no problem at all! I see you are in Monterey, so you are in my old Navy stomping grounds - I went through DLI twice, Basic Russian and Advanced Arabic. I wish I could go back for a visit.
I was working on the Latin for "Run and Find Out" - yes, it is the Kipling quote from Rikki-Tikki-Tavi - because my curiosity has always been a driving force in my life. With twenty years in the Navy in Intel work, I think that motto would be fitting.
Cheers!
Phil
