I guess I do have some things in live easier than most. I got my first kilt on the second day of the PA Celtic Fling. Changing into at the booth was an adventure, but no embarassments happened. My oldest son and a gaggle of his friends aspiring to be actors and on the Ren Faire staff bumped into us afer I had changed and my son pouted and said, "I want one". His two best friends just said "Cool!" their female friend said, "that looks awesome". Been a long time since an 18 year old girl said that to me. We got my son one later that day. And he wore it to several get together that summer. My daughter's fiance decided in the fall he had to have one and go a tartan (still haven't figure out which one it is, but I'll figure it out sooner or later) and then Christmas eve, my son's best friend shows up at the house in his kilt and boots his mother got him for Christmas and it was about 10 degrees outside. The kids seem more excited and accepting about kilts than others. Good on you and it is a good feeling when you can connect. (that's been a long time in coming too).

As far as the current youth being more accepting, I trhink it's the best possible thing, wheny ou want something to change in the future, you have to start with the youth, but oddly enough, I don't get the feeling that kids are wearing it so much more as a fashion or an anti-establishment statement, but they like it for the fact that we CAN wear it, sure it's different, and that definitely holds some appeal, but I don't get the feeling that that is the driving force.

I think you're right there. Out of that group, my son is the only one that ever went for the weird outfits. The others just liked the look and wanted one too. Now, my son I and won't even go on a backpack trip without the kilt because of the comfort and utility we both noticed on our first outing with kilts. No wet clammy shorts after the rain (we always seem to get rain when we hike), no smelly wet shorts on the hot humid days after that and he and I were the only comfortable ones. The wheels were turning for the other adults when they saw it; I think one or two are considering kilts for hiking too.

It's great that you and your son have that kind of relation as well. Frankly, even if it's not in tartan (though I swear I'll get one someday), kilts on my generation is a good thing.

    new convert

hello and welcome! I have been wearing a kilt for about five years now. I just got a new one last thursday frow the scotland shop on ebay. it is called the pride of Scotland, very nice 13oz material. As soon as my younger son saw it, he was more exited than I was! .
He will be 16 this year so I think for his birthday in May we will get him a new kilt. He likes the
stillwarters Stuart Black. I think it will make a very nice first kilt for him.
So here is to the young lads that will embrass the kilt and wear it with pride!
