I have returned !!!
Well I made it!!8)
Wearing a kilt to me would be no real problem for me
BUT I spent the three week in Mexico with my wife's family and if your are not in a bifurcated outfit you are not a real man and are suspect.
We arrived home at 00:30 in the morning and the first thing I did is to remove my pants and doned my kilt to do what needed to be done before bed.
After three weeks bifurcated I know I truly HATE pants.
I love Mexico, the Mexican people and my wife's family.
Some day they will be ready for a man like me wearing a unbifurcated garmet.

Go alomg to get along.
Since Elva and I stayed with her family I decided that not making waves would be the most prudent way to go. If we were staying on our own with our own transportation I would have had no problem with going out and about in a kilt. One of these days maybe I did take two kilts along just in case.
We were in Tenamextlin, Jalisco, Mexico. Tenamextlin is about two hours south and west of Guadalara.
Anyway it is good to return home and kilted again.

Robert, I'm sure your wife appreciates your consideration of the feelings of her family a great deal. Such things can be very important for peace in ones home.

That your wife's family will judge the man (whose wife he is married to!!) as suspect, not a real man or dubious in any way because of sartorial elegance?!?
Some of my wife's family understand, some dont. Their choice: not mine. Am sorry if I offend anyone here, but am not prepared to be dictated to by someone who hasn't at least made an effort to understand.
So why should Robert? Peace in one's home? And in one's mind?!?
Mexicans? Any link with, say, Aztecs? Did indiginous Mexicans always have trousers? With a seam? Oh, and nice shoes to match?
With everything going on in this world today: to not be accepted by a spouces family for dress sense seems pretty lame to me.
OK, flame away.....

There's a big cultural difference between the US and Mexico. They see thing differently in many ways and machismo is an important component. I've seen that with the Mexicans that have immigrated to my area. They tend to be very conservative and rigid in their views of what's acceptable and what isn't. When one is a guest in another culture it's just courtesy to avoid making them too uncomfortable with you.

Nah, no flames, but just a thought, here.
If you live in the USA where there's a lot of Scots heritage, many people know what a kilt is. Sure there will be people who dish dirt anyway, and sure some recent immigrants have never seen one but the majority know what it IS, at least. When you step out in a kilt, especially a tartan one, people at least are aware of the existance of the things. You'll get "bagpipes" comments and "sheep" comments and stuff like that, but the truth is that the people who say those things are showing that they know what a kilt IS.
In Mexico they may or they may not have any idea what a kilt is. There's not a lot of Scottish history in Mexico, eh? However, they know full well what a skirt is. Could Robert wear a kilt in Mexico? Sure. Could he just say "deal with it, arseholes." to his wife and his wife's family? Sure he could.
But he chose not to. He chose to make the compromise of wearing pants for a while, and spare his wife's feelings.
Here on XMarks where we all really like kilts, we think they're great. And...well, they ARE great. But you know, they're just a piece of clothing. They're no better nor worse than any other piece of clothing and that includes pants. I happen to like kilts. You happen to like kilts, but you know what? A whole, whole, whole lot of the world likes pants better. They DO have some advantages, you know?
Robert showed a little bit of sensitivity and awareness for his wifes' heritage and his wife's feelings by making the supreme sacrifice of ** OH MY GOD** wearing pants for a few weeks. You know, somehow I think he'll survive, manhood intact.
Good on ya Robert, and welcome back.

Unless his pants were too tight!!
I hear you, and thanks for the education on Mexican machismo. Am glad I asked the Q.
To be fair, "Just deal with it, arseholes" wouldn't be my approach but it did make me smile. (Meant to add my wife {and hence her family} is English, so pisstaking is often and frequent!!)
Thank you for insight...
