I mostly wear mine to work with long-sleeved, buttoned shirts with the sleeves rolled up. I always roll up my sleves if I don't have a tie on. The belt is a wide black one with a big, pewter celtic knot buckle. I now have an inexpensive three-tassel day sporran off of ebay, though I lust after one of Freelander Sporrano's sporrans as the 'reglar inexpensive ones just aren't big enough.

Shoes are black "jungle" boots with knee-high socks, pulled down to boot level.

For Easter (church and family brunch) I wore a white shirt with a solid dark blue tie (the kilt is a Black Watch). I had on the same belt and buckle as always, but wore a white fur, three tassel semi-formal sporran. I had on nice black rockport dress shoes and had the socks pulled up to over-the-calf. By the end of the day I was wishing I had garters and flashes, but I'll get 'em in time.

I've a wedding to attend later in the Spring and I'm not sure whether I'll use the event as an excuse to buy an Argyll jacket, or I'll just rent one.

Yes the Marine Corps has a Mess dress but it is normaly a SNCO and Officer thing. I would think that wearing it would be Ok IF the tartan was Leatherneck Tartan. That would be dependant on the event.
As far as Semi Formal I think that a nice polo shirt looks fine.
The problem with wearing a tie with a kilt is that you will have to tie it a good bit shorter then normal because the high waste aspect of traditional kilts.

If you have a kilt and do attend semi-formal/day event, an Argyle Jacket would be a great addition to your wardrobe. It is like buying a sports coat.

Yeah, I have to agree with Les, it's all about looking neat, and enjoying the looks you get for it. Because the kilt attracts attention no matter where I wear it, but I would never go to a fine event wearing a UK for example. I want to stand out for a good reason, not a "Dear God why?" one.

This may be slightly blasphemous to some, but I think that depends on the level of "fine event", and which UK. Their "Mocker" seems to be a fairly versatile garment, not to the level of "formal", but it still has possibilities.

Oh, I've worn the Black Mocker to business casual events as if it were comparable to khakis. But wearing it to a black tie affair... Maybe if they ever bring back the tuxedo kilt, and maybe if i can ever afford one!

Also, I tend to have less questions directed towards me when I'm in a tartan as opposed to the UK... It's a bit harder for some to accept as a kilt if it doesnt have the tartan.

I was just invited to be the speaker at the Alcoholics Anonymous speaker meeting down in Flagstaff next Friday night.

They told me its traditional for the speaker to wear a tie.

Plan on wearing a tartan tie with a UK Mocker...not sure what tartan or color mocker yet.

Formal enough for an AA meeting for sure.

    Wearing Prince Charlie

If you want to be technical, the PC is considered evening wear and should only be worn to black or white tie events that are conducted in the evening hours or that start in the late afternoon and continue into the evening. The PC is Basically a tux and should be worn with a tux shirt, bow tie, good dress shoes or ghillies, etc. Check out my gallery for pics of me at my wedding (full PC get up. It was during the late afternoon and the reception was in the early evening.

There are also tux style jackets that do not include the waist coate, I forget what they are called. These can be worn either semi-formally with a button down shiet and tie or formally with tux shirt and bow tie. This style of dress is appropriate for less formal events as well as formal events taking place during the day.

Alternately you can wear kilt Tweed sport coats with a button down and tie for less formal events. Basically the same place that you would wear a sport coat and slacks, or perhaps a suit. Certain military jackets can also be worn as sport coats.

This is the "formal dress code" as I understand it. I am sure that Hamish or one of the other board members will correct any errors in fashion that I might have commited.
