Welcome Ian,
You remind me of a story of a famous Spanish bullfighter. One night he was entertaining some friends and was cooking for his guests. He donned a frilly apron while he was cooking.
A friend began teasing him for being so feminine and wearing a frilly apron.
The bullfighter pulled himself to his full height, looked down his nose at the friend who was teasing him, and said, "Sir, I'll have you know that EVERYTHING I do is masculine."

Welcome! I also brew beer, as do several others here.
Recently I've had a few people wonder why I wear kilts if I'm not of Scottish ancestry. I was talking with three people tonight about it, two men and a woman. I said I wear kilts because they're comfortable, and the two guys got it, but not the woman. Funny how that works.
Andrew.

Perhaps she didn't grasp the connection between comfort and male anatomy?

Nice one.
Just joined meself Ian and I find truth in those words of yours. It isn't just an individual experience to wear a kilt, but also a public declaration of one's heritage and paradoxically, independence. I've always been a fan of leading by example and I reckon by wearing a kilt we (the Wearers) show acceptance of any cultural or simply individual statement. And it feels good so all the better for us.

Can I welcome you if I just arrived here? I'm also a military veteran (though not a combat vet) and I also brew beer. I do like American Football, though.
What's your favorite beer you've brewed? Any recipes to share?

The Social Construction of "Man"
Hi Ian and others
I am interested in your comments on mass media. I'm a university professor who teaches media criticism to several hundred undergraduate students a year. I have for fifteen years lectured on the odd conventions of male and female, masculine and feminine clothing. Pants, as you all know, don't fit the male body. However, until about two months ago, these lectures were just that--a lot of talk.
I was so amazed to "discover" kilts. My wife heard my lecture and asked me why I didn't actually do anything about it. My response was that I did not know what to do. What options did men have? Well, kilts!!
I got my first kilt several months ago (I've bought four more since--two are still being made for me), and wow--are these the greatest thing I've ever worn or what?
It took me 42 years to find adaquate clothing.
I know I have not yet address the issue of mass media, and I will, but for now I just wanted to join the conversation and group of men. It is said that one is rarely born into their true family. I interpret this to mean that we aquire meaningful relationships as we go. The kind of warmth, insight and honesty I see here is great
