Our village has an annual Victorian Evening the week prior to Christmas, when all (or most) of the shops and banks stay open until 10.00pm, each one handing out free food and drinks - the Chinese take-away restaurant is the best port of call!!! The church choir and handbell ringers provide carols in the square. There is street entertainment too, and a traditional roasted chestnut seller. The staff at the open establishments try to dress in costume of the period, but it is never very convincing as they do not try very hard, and the public is not expected to at all. It is a hugely disappointing event every time. Each year everyone thinks it will be better than last year - but it never is!!!
