My Ancient Hunting Mackintosh was made locally but the material came from House of Edgar. The colour tones are quite different from the Lochcarron tartan of the same name. I don't know if this is the same for other tartans. Your MacLaren is really nice looking!

Robin, the muted colour tartans are SO much nicer than the modern colours. That is a very attractive tartan the blue and green of which are very close indeed to my oldest (1973) kilt: Gunn, in ancient colours.

I'll second that! I think the various colors actually look richer.

When I entered the shop I didn't knew what to expect...my 1st visit...but they had swatch books of about all known weavers.
I was looking for the ancient MacLaren (Since I'm a descendant of a Laurie...very faint, but who cares? ), I've already seen the Lochcarron tartans of the MacLaren, but I didn't really liked them, so I was very pleased to see what other weaver made of it...and of course the most expensive was the nicest...poor poor me ;)
I fell in love with the "Old & Rare" muted...the colours are moody and rich the same time...hard to explain, but just lovely....looked at it inside...lights on...lights off...outside...in the sun...in the shade. Perfect!
The sales guy warned me..."it won't be cheap", but he saw the glare in my eyes and added..."okey...you're lost...I can see that"....I'm now gonna take your measurements".
I had a dozen of kilt options to choose from...my head almost exploded...my wife phoned me...
Wife: "still at the hairdresser?
Poor me: "..."errrr...uhmmm...yes...well...no"
Wife: "noooooo!!!! not again!?!?!"
Poor, poor me: "err...well...uhmm..."
Wife: "The MacLaren?"
Almost dead me: "uh...errr"
Wife: "Idiot!"
Death row me: "uh..well"
Sales guy: "Coffee?"
Me: "you must have a bottle of whisky somewhere...."

That conversation is hilarious!
Although now that you mention it, that does help explain why the Hector Russel shop in San Francisco shares space with The Whiskey Shoppe!

Also waiting for march
I just orderd a 6yard 16oz. Kilt from the kilt store that is also due in march.
Mine is in Muir ancient from lacarron which looks almost identical to your
Mc Claren .
The Muir tartan has three red lines in it,instead of the one in yours.
What color hose do you plan to wear with it?
Joe

I too prefer the muted or ancient colours to the modern tartans. They seem to make a richer looking tartan with more character.

The ancient Muir tartan (by Lochcarron):
That's an awesome tartan!
Lovat blue and lovat green hoses will go very well I think...and of course Arran/off white for dress, and Oatmeal and Grey with matching shirt/sweater.
