Welcome Roan. I like that name, any history to it?
Wear your kilt with pride and if need be, give a brief history lesson of kilts and possible Scots who have settled your area before to those who just don't get it. Seeing something different enough times can sometimes become the "norm." So wear your kilt as often as you can, and at least you can be happy and free!
DALE.

Welcome to XMarks, Roan. The more you wear your kilt in your town, the sooner people will become accustomed to it.

Yeah, I was born in ROANoke, Virginia. Roanoke itself has all kinds of stories, including that of the "lost colony" it was possibly named after.

Welcome Roan,
I used to live in Bristol and work in Kingsport and the surrounding hills back in 1971 so I know where you're coming from. Worked for Campbell Ford much to my grandfather Murdoch Macdonald's consternation.

Now I am a US citizen but I've been to Canada many times and I really love the place...hence the big ole "Canada" stuff...which is by way of saying that no matter where you go (with the possible exception of Venice, California) SOMEBODY is going to give you grief for dressing out of the "norm".
I have family in Chicago. It's funny that you sound like you get as much grief for the maple leaf as most people do for a kilt, lol. I've been told I could wear the kilt there without too much trouble, when compared to the region I live in now. (Not that trouble stops me.)
Canada is one of my dream vacation sorta places, particulary Montreal and Nova Scotia. I have a lot of apreciation for the way their country is run.

Yeah...be there on the days when I wear the Maple Leaf hoodie AND the kilt....their little heads are so busy spinning that they are rendered speechless.
I was at a pipe band competition a few weeks ago that was just over on the next block from me...for once I wan't the only guy in the neighborhood with a kilt. I expect that summer will change the dynamic some...either folks will look and say "Oh, he's keeping cool" or "Jeez...isn't that too hot to wear in this weather?".
And Montreal is a gas and I've not made it to Nova Scotia but don't pass up a trip to Toronto (or Vancouver, for that matter)...Toronto truly rocks. I was lucky enough to have been in Montreal for the last season of the Expo's and the nice Montreal Tourism folks treated us to a trip to the ball game...yee-hah!
Best
