If I could only have one kilt and was limiuted to $200, I'd probably go with one from Rocky or a Stillwater. My favorite, now, has to be my new kilt, 9 yard Macneil of Barra Ancient from Locharron, through Matt.

My thought as well . . . depending on whether he was drawn more to contemporary or tartan.

My intent was to convert the young man to kilted freedom. Many start contemporary and go to traditional ( as I have ). I just thought that he would actually wear a UK. Once that is done it's just a matter of time until other kilts start comming. The problem is that I feel like I have misled this young man. I honestly believe that if I could do it all over I would have rather spent the money on quality over quantity.

I couldn't agree more...I'd have never purchased one single non-wool, non-tartan kilt.
As for advising your friend's son, I'd steer him towards USAK or SWK, depending on his finances. If he's got just a bit more money, then send him to Matthew Newsome to get a 4-yard box-pleated or a 5-yard knife-pleated casual kilt in the tartan of his choice.
To answer this for myself, my 5-yard casual Fitzsimmons tartan kilt from Matthew Newsome is the one I won't do without...you'd have to pry it from my cold dead loins to get me to part with it. Everything else I have is relegated to playing a supporting role.

If I could have only one single kilt it would have to be a SportKilt, U.S. Army Tartan, size large, 20" custom length. I could put it on when I get out of bed, roll down the waist band once for my 3 mile run, roll it back up and throw on a T-Shirt for coffee at Starbucks, hang it on the ceiling fan chain to dry and air out while I shower, put it back on with workboots and a tucked in tank top for enjoying the days shopping, business and boondogles then swap the work boots for shined up black boots, add a black wide belt and switch to a white buttoned down, tucked in, sleeveless shirt and party at the pub till bed time, by way of the Wednesday nite prayer meeting, of course.
Now THAT'S the kilt I'd have if I could only have one. Somebody mentioned $200, well I'd spend the $125 I had left on a matching "women's kilted skirt" by Sportkilt, a dozen yellow roses (this is Texas), dinner, a movie, and a cute little baby doll nightie for my gal, Peggy. Hum, I 'd still have $5 left to donate to whatever worthy group is at the doors of Walmart.
Well, I guess a world in which I only have one kilt wouldn't be so bad, but, thank God I've got about 30 of 'em ... so no matter what the occassion, no matter what the weather conditions, no matter what the current state of world affairs, whether it be church or play, exercise or boozersize, work or, errrr, more work I can, with great pride, joy and comfort ...
KILT ON!!

Definitely, if I had only the chance to wear just ONE kilt all thru my life,.... I'd go for an 8 yards in my "Valencia" tartan,.... but I'll have to wait for that! ;)
¡Salud!

If I could only have one kilt it would a Utilikilt Workman's. I would choose it over my traditionals because of the carrying capacity and rugged construction. I don't consider UK's as a starter kilt but rather an option. I started with traditionals, but lately have been buying more UK's. I think your decision to recommend a UK was a good one. If he finds that he likes wearing a kilt he can always add a traditional later if he wants one.

4. Call utilikilts a training kilt if you want, it worked ( and still does ) for me. Its the reason I have gotten into traditional kilts ( by far my favorite )
So, would he be better off with the other train of thought...
(You may only own one of somthing, but it's the best you can get )
(He may not waste his time on some cheap knock- offs )
Or did I give him sound advise?
A training kilt?
I've a closet full of training kilts, if that's what you want to call them. And while you're looking down yer nose at my mocker (the first UK I owned) you'll note that your own feet are no further off the ground than mine, even while standing in water!
Mockers, Originals, Leather, Survival, Workman's and sarongs galore!
Remember, friend, FREEDOM
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?
