That looks good-sure I'm the resident curmudgeon-tough but someone has to do it.
Though to be serious-we are I think proud of our heritage, and look to it for inspiration and justification: but I get scared that it can be so watered down that one day there will be nothing left.

James,
I appreciate the craftmanship involved in making a real sgian dubh (Panache takes a minute to drool while looking at Rab's website.) However I feel the tradition is being kept alive by such things as knife handled bottle cap openers, plastic blank "blades" on mockup sgian dubhs, or even "real" sgian dubhs with chrome plated dull knife blades . We remember the tradition of the sock knife that once upon a time ALWAYS was a real and sharp working blade. If it was to only be a honest to goodness real sharp blades or nothing at all, eventually the sgian dubh would disappear completely. Just like kilts evolve, so do the accessories. I say better to evolve that become extinct.

Thanks for the kind comments on my work.
Personally, I'd rather have a bottle opener than a blunt (or plastic) blade any day. Although I respect and largely agree with the feelings on retaining the traditional Sgian Dubh with a sharp and useable blade, many societies have become a lot more restrictive in this regard. (probably best left for another discussion)

After looking over Rab's work, I think I'll "get me ona dem!"
Oh, and sgian-brew is probably the funniest thing I've heard all day. I like that...
And to James: yes, I fully appreciate tradition and heritage (read my profile). I have a real Sgian Dubh, I just need a safety one to wear places that a knife would be forbidden. I called it a sgian dubh out of lack of a better word. Luckily Richland remidied that for me....heh heh...."sgian brew"....

I am in favor of FUNCTIONAL parts to kilts accessories. If someone is anti-knife (as some her are) or one does not use a knife except when eating or cooking, then an alternative is ideal!
I HATE "fake" knives-> plastic ones, clubs that look like knives, or unsharpenable (is that a word?) stainless steel.
A bottle opener is an alternative I would DEFINATELY have (especially if I drank a lot of beer or bottled drinks). The ones on that site look beautiful and made by someone who CARES about their handiwork (I can NOT emphasize how important that is!!!).
I am soon going to either buy or make a bottle opener kilt pin (much more practical than most alternatives).

I would love to see a bottle opener kilt pin. It would be an attractive alternative to the standard sword type pin.

Actually, Ron of Clan MacBubba has and wears one. It inspired me. I would like to "steal" the idea.

When I first saw Panaches creations, I said publicly, "nice, but when I drink, there's always openers available in the kitchen, or the waitress opens it for me." - I'm one of the advocates for a blade being a functional item. However, I spent the day hanging with Alan and Panache and a few others at the Campbell games, and had the need to use a skean don't TWICE!!! So, while I still advocate that a blade be a blade, I will grudgingly admit that the skean don't is a valid accessory to have.

I fail to see the problem...
Kilted drinking - or drinking kilted - involves:
- whiskey
- whisky
- stout on tap
- just about anything else on tap
I fail to see the need of a bottle opener altogether
