I also have never heard of any 'rules' regarding scarves. If you were dressing formally, I'd say coordinate your colors, but if you're wearing it because it's cold outside I don't think it matters.

Been there, done that! I wore my Hearts scarf into a Celtic pub in St. Louis, McGuirk's to be exact. Not much was said, but I did get a definate dirty look from the bartender -- but at least it was no the Rangers!

I have a couple of tartan scarves that I wear a lot in the winter. When I'm wearing a kilt, the tartans don't match. It's funny, what I wouldn't do with a necktie, I'll do with a scarf .

You seem to have the answers you were looking for but, at this late stage, I'll throw in my thoughts too......
With a tartan kilt, I would always, yes always, opt for a plain colour scarf to colour co-ordinate with it - I would never mix my tartans, no matter which they were!

With a plain, non-tartan kilt, I would almost certainly select a tartan scarf, to co-ordinate if possible and to add a colour accent when required (it depends upon the kilt!)

I do believe that is my new favourite Hamish picture. I love the tones. Subdued but eye catching, subtle shades of blues and grays. Leaves on the lawn, but the grass is still green. A scarf and thick looking hose. Gives the feeling of a hint of chill in the air, the beginning of fall maybe.
A fantastic picture.

so, Hamish, do you have an entire entourage of phtographers, so you have a pic ready for most any post here?
( oh, I agree...mixing tartans is almost as dangerous as mixing scotch and tequila )

Thanks for posting the picture, Hamish - it makes the point very neatly.

Contrasting checks and tartans can look spectacular.

Wollen scarves are not to be worn formally, save with an overcoat "in transit". Scarves and evening jackets just don't, I think, look right. They go, however, well in daywear with, for example, a tweed Argyll jacket. I would, actually, not (and don't) grab for a solid but a tartan that harmonizes and coordinates well with my jacket and headgear. Even with a "checked" or (subtle) tartan jacket I grab for a patterned and never a solid. The only solids, I think, that really work (and are not overly boring) are garish and bright but these days less my thing. I would not, in general, try to directly coordinate the scarf with the kilt--- only indirectly via the coordination of jacket to kilt.
Beyond selecting a scarf I think its important also it wear it "correctly". I would neither wear one like Snoopy's take on Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen ("Red Baron") nor without a jacket (I leave the fur coat and shorts look to guys like Kid Rock).
A plaid is another matter.
