I was under the impression that George Square was already drowning in statues and holds the record for the most statues in a public place in Scotland.

Why should this be the most appropriate place? Why not Stirling?

    Just want to know.

Why shouldn't it be appropriate? What could be more appropriate than a city in Scotland honoring Scots heroes? If this is inappropriate, then how appropriate is a statue of Queen Victoria or Prince Albert in that same location? If you are not interested in supporting the idea, then don't sign. Easy-peasy, right?

The Stirling area already commemorates Wallace (the Wallace Monument) and Bruce (the Bannockburn Monument).

The reason for the short list of names is that the petition is brandy-new. It was just started this morning.

Glasgow essentially grew as a city in the Victorian era and all the statues (bar Burns) appear to be of Victorian figures, the latest being Gladstone.

In the nineteenth century it was de rigeur for any large urban town or city to have a statue of Victoria and often Albert (to please Victoria ) so the City Fathers no doubt considered such statues appropriate.

For Scots heroes they went for literary or science figures instead.

There is a Glasgow monument to Wallace at Robroyston which was erected by public subscription in 1900.

It can be viewed at http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/images_ww.html .

And that's the other thing - funding. How popular would such a monument be with the council tax payers of Glasgow?

I would suggest that a petition to the Scottish Parliament would be more appropriate. The issue of celebrating such heroes (and this is not under dispute) is surely more of a national one for Scotland.

I regret that I cannot sign.

#26. At least they are honest about their numbers unlike some of these on line petitions for bizarre causes which claim to have over 200,000 signatures. I think tney need to get this linked to a lot more websites and forums. I'm probably biased but I always consider the best Wallace statue to be the one at Bemersyde here in the Scottish Borders.

I see the paint has been refreshed on the shield.

I'm partial to the statue at the Wallace Monument, myself -

If I could ever locate a straight-on image of this statue, I would immediately visit my tattoo artist.

By all means, if anyone has a site or forum where they would like to promote this petition, feel free to post the URL there.
